I also have a vague feeling that back in the day certain HDMI cables were ARC compatible - maybe they all are, or maybe they aren't, but try a different cable or at least make sure that you are using a reliable modern cable. Sounds like you've got that bit sorted, but it's worth double checking you are using the correct HDMI ports at both ends, and that both menu settings are correct. As stated in the manual the gear at both ends needs to understand this.
